EV connectors and charging speeds
As of 17 Oct 2026, EPD lists 988 public charging locations with 18213 chargers. Here is what the speed classes and plugs mean, with the number of locations for each.
Charging speeds (EPD's classes)
| Class | Power | Good for | Locations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fast | ≥100kW | A short top-up when in a hurry | 69 |
| Quick | <100kW | Topping up during a meal or shopping | 542 |
| Medium | <20kW | Long stays (work, overnight) | 618 |
| Standard | <7kW | Overnight or very long stays | 120 |
Actual speed also depends on the car's maximum charging power, battery temperature and state of charge. The “quick” hub includes both quick and fast chargers.
Connector types
CCS2 (457 locations)
CCS Combo 2 is the most common DC quick-charging plug in Hong Kong: a Type 2 top with two extra DC pins below. Most cars sold in Hong Kong quick-charge through CCS2.
Type 2 (737 locations)
IEC 62196 Type 2 is the standard AC plug. Most medium chargers (around 7kW) in Hong Kong use it, and so do some quick AC chargers (e.g. 43kW).
CHAdeMO (43 locations)
CHAdeMO is the Japanese DC quick-charging standard used by cars such as older Nissan Leafs. Few Hong Kong chargers still offer it.
GB/T (34 locations)
GB/T is the mainland China national standard, with separate AC and DC plugs. Hong Kong has a few, mostly for mainland-spec vehicles.
13A socket (120 locations)
BS 1363 is the ordinary 13A three-pin socket. It only charges slowly, usually with the carmaker's portable cable.
Before you go
- Most operators need their app or an account to start a session: set it up in advance.
- Parking is usually charged separately, and some operators charge idle fees once charging ends.
